Culture Note 08 — How French compliments work (and typical responses)

Compliments may be downplayed: ‘Oh, ça va...’ to avoid sounding arrogant.

Intermediate

What to know (practical points) • Compliments may be downplayed: ‘Oh, ça va...’ to avoid sounding arrogant. • A simple ‘merci’ is always acceptable. • Overly intense praise can sound exaggerated; match the social level.

Micro-dialogue (French → English) • A: C’était super, ton français ! — Your French was great! • B: Merci, c’est gentil. — Thanks, that’s kind. • B: Oh, j’ai encore du boulot. — Oh, I still have work to do.

What to do as a learner • Safe responses: Merci, C’est gentil, Ça me fait plaisir. • Optional humility: J’apprends encore / J’essaie.

Pronunciation and delivery tie‐in • Tone and meaning live in intonation and rhythm groups, not only vocabulary. • If you sound too flat or too English-stressed, the message changes.

How to practise “Culture Note 08 — How French compliments work (and typical responses)”

This intermediate lesson is part of the French Culture series on Chase in French. Music, food, films, café etiquette, and the unwritten rules that shape how French people talk to each other.

Follow the Ears → Mouth → Eyes method: first listen to how native speakers say it, then repeat it out loud until it feels natural, and only then look at the spelling. Short, repeated practice over several days beats one long session.

Want guided feedback on your accent? The Chase in French Academy and live classes turn lessons like this into structured training, and the weekly podcast lets you hear these patterns in real conversation.
