What to know (practical points) • Compliments may be downplayed: ‘Oh, ça va...’ to avoid sounding arrogant. • A simple ‘merci’ is always acceptable. • Overly intense praise can sound exaggerated; match the social level. Micro-dialogue (French → English) • A: C’était super, ton français ! — Your French was great! • B: Merci, c’est gentil. — Thanks, that’s kind. • B: Oh, j’ai encore du boulot. — Oh, I still have work to do. What to do as a learner • Safe responses: Merci, C’est gentil, Ça me fait plaisir. • Optional humility: J’apprends encore / J’essaie. Pronunciation and delivery tie‐in • Tone and meaning live in intonation and rhythm groups, not only vocabulary. • If you sound too flat or too English-stressed, the message changes.
