Core points
• Y replaces ‘à + place/thing’; en replaces ‘de + thing/quantity’.
• Use fixed chunks: j’y vais, j’en veux, j’en ai marre.
• Pronunciation: y/en often attach to the verb.
Spoken vs written
• Written French may show fuller forms; spoken French often compresses (linking, schwa loss,
dropped ‘ne’).
